Violence onstage (literal or mental) often occurs at the most pivotal and heightened places in a production. How can we as the creators of theatre use all the elements of the stage to magnify the impact and our own understanding of these events? This workshop uses the principles of Moment Work to unpack and explore the language of violence. Participants will create complex moments and sequences that explore the themes and images behind the reasons why characters fight and how we can best articulate them. Many of the world’s most riveting theatrical works have been adaptations of books, movies, historical accounts, interviews - the list is nearly endless. How can Moment Work be used to adapt these stories and texts to the stage, unlocking the theater’s unique power for visual and experiential storytelling? Join 20-year Tectonic company member Jimmy Maize, who has adapted everything from real-life-stories (The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later, The Temple Bombing), to franchises beloved in their mediums (Harry Potter, SpongeBob SquarePants). In this class, he will help students explore how material from different mediums can take on new life when adapted to the stage. Students will be allowed to explore material of their own choosing, and through the process will create short 10-20 minute pieces.

MOMENT WORK FOR THE PLAYWRIGHT

WITH MOISÉS KAUFMAN & LEIGH FONDAKOWSKI
Most playwrights working in America today have their plays developed solely through a process of having actors read them. In this lab, playwrights get the rare opportunity to test out their theatrical ideas and to write in three dimensions. By taking their work through a Moment Work process that teaches them the inherent poetry and dramaturgy in all of the elements of the stage, playwrights discover how and why their story is best suited for the stage.
